Service Description

This class is held at our Temescal/Rockridge studio and is a 3-Week class. Fridays 2:30 - 5:00PM, December 4 - 18 In this beginner handbuilding class students will explore the reductive and carving methods inspired by Japanese Kurinuki, which means “to hollow out”. Leaning into solid forms and heavy visual weight, participants will make 1-2 trinket boxes from a solid block of clay by carving and removing clay to reveal a hollowed form with a fitted lid. Week 1: Basic structures Students will sketch out their designs, source inspiration, and start with a solid block of clay to remove bulk and alter the rudimentary form of their box and lid. Week 2: Refining form Working with the basic structure from week 1, students will learn the different stages of clay and when to remove excess weight to refine form. Lid fit options will be explored relative to form. Pieces should be finished and submitted for bisque fire after this class. Week 3: Glaze and design Once pieces are fired, students will learn surface design techniques and glaze applications to finish their pieces!
