WEEK 1 — Form + Mark Making We'll start by exploring how small changes to a thrown form can create a completely different visual experience. Students will throw a series of simple forms and experiment with altering, faceting, pinching, paddling, and changing rims. We'll also begin building a personal library of marks, patterns, and textures through carving and impression. Focus: form, proportion, alteration, mark-making WEEK 2 — Carve, Impress + Pattern How can a pattern emphasize or transform the shape of a vessel? We'll explore carving, incising, stamping, and texture while experimenting with repetition, rhythm, scale, and negative space. Students will begin developing surface treatments that can be carried across multiple pieces to create a cohesive body of work. Focus: carving, texture, pattern, repetition WEEK 3 — Color + Mishima This week we'll introduce color as an integral part of the surface. Students will experiment with underglazes, colored slips, and Mason stains, creating custom color palettes and testing how different colors interact with carved surfaces. We'll also explore mishima, using carved lines and inlay to create graphic patterns and drawings within the clay surface. Focus: color, Mason stains, underglaze, mishima, layering WEEK 4 — Resist + Layering We'll bring our techniques together and explore how layering can create depth and complexity. Students will experiment with wax resist, sgraffito, layered underglaze, and other surface techniques. We'll look at how revealing and obscuring different layers can create movement and contrast. Students will also begin finishing a small series of related pieces. Focus: resist, layering, contrast, cohesion WEEK 5 — Finish + Find Your Voice The final week is about pulling everything together. Students will finish glazing their work and have the opportunity to experiment with a final surface treatment or piece. We'll look at the work we've created throughout the session and discuss what techniques, forms, and visual ideas feel most exciting to continue exploring. We'll end with a casual group critique focused on experimentation, process, and developing a personal visual language. Focus: finishing, reflection, critique, developing a series
