We’ll discuss the fundamental elements of design with a focus on form, space, balance, and function, particularly as they pertain to lighting. Following a demonstration of three essential building techniques—pinch, coil, and slab—students will brainstorm concepts for their lamps, considering how light interacts with the forms they create. Week 2: Constructing Lamp Bases & Forms Students will focus on building the foundational structure of their lamps, using a combination of pinch pots, slabs, or coils to create the main form. Week 3: Refining Form & Planning for Light Students will refine their lamp structures, ensuring all sections are well-constructed and attached securely using proper techniques (scoring, slipping, and blending seams). This week will also focus on planning openings or translucent areas that will allow light to shine through. Instructor feedback will guide adjustments to ensure both aesthetic appeal and functionality as a lamp. Week 4: Surface Textures & Details This week focuses on introducing texture and surface decoration to the lamp forms. Students will experiment with carving, stamping, and applying slip to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their designs. Week 5: Fine Tuning & Preparing for Firing Students will spend this week refining the final details of their lamp structures, focusing on smoothing surfaces, refining textures, and addressing any imperfections. They will ensure that all areas for hardware insertion are correctly sized and positioned. Week 6: Glazing, Assembly & Final Touches Students will glaze their bisqued lamp structures, focusing on how glaze and color can complement the design and interact with light. Techniques for applying glaze, oxides, and underglazes will be demonstrated. Once the glazed pieces are fired, students will assemble their lamps using provided hardware.
