Service Description

Join us in this 2-day workshop led by artist and sculptor Zoe Dufour Sunday (February 22nd): 10am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Monday (February 23rd): 10am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Clayroom Oakland; 4268 Broadway in Oakland In this workshop, we will be slab building portraits at 3/4 scale, focusing on primary emotions, and how they manifest in the movements of facial volumes, while learning sculpting techniques informed by the antique, Renaissance, and 19th century practices. The class will learn how to compile information from multiple sources into an individual’s likeness in clay. We will learn to rapidly understand and articulate expression by relating the large masses of the the face, and studying how they move in concert together to form a clear emotion. This type of kinetic observation fosters an understanding of structural anatomy in a three dimensional way, while encouraging students to reference relationships between fixed anatomical points. Students will learn how to judge likeness with volume and mass, in addition to learning to reading depth, while translating what they observe accurately to their sculpture. We will supplement our work with photo references to aid in understanding the emotional gesture. The class will learn how to make quality references for themselves, and learn how to read a photograph three- dimensionally. Recommended tools are: two wooden modeling tools, one thin and small, one larger, the number 204 sculpture house rake, a hand-mirror, and a chopstick. Students will also learn how to prepare their pieces to be fired at the end of the workshop, so students can go home with a finished piece. The workshop will include sculpting demonstration, constructive critiques, and lecture. No experience is necessary, teaching will be tailored to individuals. Day 1: How to use two dimensional references to create three dimensional objects, breakdown of measuring techniques, and how to use proportional cannons, with brief introduction to critical anatomical points, and material management. Sculpting Time. Day 2: Demonstration on how best to tool the clay to create full and life-like forms and surface treatments. What’s included: -25 lbs of Clay, hands-on instruction from Zoe, firing services, tools. ** We recommend your own tools but we have some tools that can be borrowed if needed! Cancellation Policy

Fees & class schedule: Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and firing up to 25 lbs of clay. Additional work may be fired for a fee. Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay Classes are subject to change if minimum student quota isn't met (7 students). Class switches will only be available 1 week prior to the commencement of classes and based on the capacity of classes at time of request.​ Attendance: It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first week of classes. No “make-up” classes are given but you're more than welcome to drop-in on another session if there is an opening or absence. For Adult classes, Kids must be 14-years old or older Personal belongings: Any items left behind 30-days after last class may be discarded without notice. Refund policy: Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Refund or Credit (minus $20 processing fee) if a request for refund is received TWO WEEKS and only two weeks before the start of a class. Credit (no refund) with less the 48 hour notice ONLY if your spot can be filled. No refunds or credits after attending 1st class. Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes. One-Time class registrations such as Drop-In Clay or Friday Night Clay are considered final ONE WEEK before start of class. Open studio hours for students: Monday- Friday: 10AM-6PM Saturday: 10AM-7PM Sunday 10AM-7:30PM (Hours subjected to change upon five days' notice)
