About the Artist: In pursuit of an art practice rooted in age-old traditions, Bruno Kark discovered techniques that continue to inspire new forms. Whether constructing sculptural shapes from wheel-thrown cylinders (altered, faceted, and carved) or slab-rolled objects, his aesthetic has been deeply influenced by the time he spent as an apprentice in Bizen, Japan. Many of his current works are designed to complement the compositions of Ikebana flower arranging, particularly the abstract Sogetsu school. An enthusiast of historic vases from Japan, Korea, China, and the Pacific Rim, Kark has incorporated classic glazes such as Shino, Tenmoku, Oribe, and Celadon into his work. His kilns are fired with natural gas to a high temperature, cone 10, in reduction. These traditional earth tones playfully complete a variety of ceramic forms, ranging from small jars that fit in the palm of the hand to large-scale wheel-thrown vases, some over four feet tall, and platters up to three feet in diameter.
